What does the brake light switch do anyway?
It pretty much does what you think it does. It activates your brake lights. However, it ties into many other processes that may also stop working at the same time because of the problem.
Ok, well, how does it work… Exactly?
The brake pedal is pressed down and the brake light switch makes contact and activates the brake lights.
I’ve heard brake lights stay on if the brake light switch is broken. I figured it would just stay off. Why is that?
A short can occur where the brake lights stay on even when you are not pressing on your brakes. Of course, that is going to cause your brake lights to burn out much faster. It will also draw power from your battery as well which could cause you problems for obvious reasons.
Isn’t the opposite too then?
Yes. You can have a brake pedal fully depressed and not be able to activate your brake lights.
I’ve heard that my transmission shifter may not work anymore, is that true?
Some vehicles do have this problem. The brake light switches stop working and that stops the transmission shifter from working as well.
Are there other things that the system ties into that could go down as well?
Yes. It may affect the push-button start capabilities of some vehicles, it may also affect vehicle stability control, and anti-lock brakes as well.
Where do I find this thing in my vehicle?
The most common place to find it is on your brake pedal mechanism. It should be somewhere near the top of your brake pedal. It is often held in by a bracket that serves to hold on to the switch.
