What kind of stainless steel is this made out of?
It is made of 304-grade stainless steel.
Why does it matter what kind of stainless steel it is?
304-grade stainless steel contains high amounts of nickel and chromium. The mixture of those two elements gives the steel its increased corrosion resistance when compared to some of the other stainless steel types. Not all stainless steel types resist rusting as well as this type.
Why not 316-grade stainless steel?
The first reason is that the cost would be higher which would mean that you would have to pay more for this product. 316 is actually a stainless steel type that is harder than 304 stainless steel. The fact that it is harder means that it would take more work to get it into the right shape and would increase the cost of the product. Honestly, 316 stainless steel is mostly used in applications where it will see a lot of water. It is used in situations where the product is going to be underwater for long amounts of time. Basically, if it is going to travel in water then 316 is the usual choice which might be overkill since this product only will see rainwater or water from the hose when being washed.
So, this stainless steel they used does not have any plastic in it?
The manufacturer specifically told us that there is no plastic used in this steel.
The product should stand up to rust pretty well then?
Yes. It should be able to withstand rust and weather very well because of the choice of steel used.
Is this difficult to install on my van then?
Nope. The product has 3M double-sided tape. It is pre-installed on the window caps so that you do not have to do anything. You do not have to cut anything or drill anything to install this product.
So, is this a decorative thing or does it have some practical use too?
It is intended to be both. It does add to the look of your Sprinter van and it is meant to protect your Sprinter vans mirrors from nicks and scratches it would otherwise get if it did not have the mirror cover guards on the vehicle.
Wait, isn't 304 metal heavier than 430-grade metal?
We were told that is a common question but the reality is that there is no real weight difference between the two. Also, 304 stainless steel has more nickel in it which means that has a greater shine than 430-grade steel. People find 304 stainless steel more attractive than 430 stainless steel.
