Choosing a Roof Fan for Your Van

A roof fan moves stale, humid air out and pulls fresh air in, which matters in a van with people cooking, sleeping and drying gear inside. Choose the fan first, then the adapter that fits it to your roof.

Roof vent adapters

Van roofs are ribbed, not flat, so most builds use an adapter between the roof and the fan. Fennecvan makes two, both for a 14" x 14" opening. The Sprinter version is for 2007-2025 vans and covers all rib layouts. The Ford Transit version fits high and mid roof vans and is listed for the MaxxAir 4500K and RV roof AC units. Confirm the cutout size of your fan or AC on its product page before you cut.

Plan the roof

A fan competes for roof space with solar and racks, so place it before you commit to the rest. If you run a Sprinter roof rack or Ford Transit roof rack, check that it leaves room for the fan lid.

FAQs

Do I need a roof vent adapter?

On most van roofs, yes. The adapter gives the fan a flat base on a ribbed roof and a clean seal. Pick the adapter made for your van.

Can I install a roof fan myself?

Plenty of DIY builders do. It means cutting a hole in the roof, so measure twice and follow the fan maker's instructions for sealing and wiring.

Do these roof fans fit any van?

The fans themselves aren't van-specific. The adapters are: Fennecvan's are for the Sprinter and the mid and high roof Transit, so match the adapter to your van and roof height.
