Choosing a Transit Cargo Box

The first question is where the box mounts. Most exterior boxes ride on a rear ladder, tire carrier or rack rather than bolting straight to the van, so check what each box needs before you order.

Exterior boxes

  • Aluminess: the Deluxe Box Explorer Edition bundle is our top seller, with bolt-on rails and an adjustable shelf sold separately. The Slim Box With Side Door is a narrower option.
  • Tec Vanlife: the Venti aluminum box, Trenta multisport and ski box in aluminum or carbon fiber, and a split door box in aluminum or carbon fiber.
  • Sandy Vans: The Boost Box and the SV Boost Box Mini.

Aluminess rear door racks

The Aluminess Rear Door Tire & Box Rack, listed for 2015-2025 Transits, carries a spare tire or a box on the back door, and it's one of the most popular parts on this page. BackPACK is a separate Aluminess rear door storage system. The 2015+ Ford Transit BackPACK Combo is listed for low, mid and high roof vans. Add-on mounts include a Rotopax plate, MaxTrax clamshell mount, Hi-Lift jack mount, L-track upgrade kit and small bolt-on plate. Aluminess also makes a 2015+ Transit surf pole.

What does a cargo box mount to?

It depends on the box. Many mount to a rear ladder, tire carrier or the Aluminess rear door rack, and some to a roof rack. Each product page lists what it needs. Not sure what your setup will take? Contact us with your year and VIN.

Aluminum or carbon fiber?

Tec Vanlife makes the Trenta and split door boxes in both. Carbon fiber costs more. Compare weights and sizes on the product pages.
