Both types are possible. In fact, if you let your vehicle get worn down all the way then it is very likely that it will have permanent damage.
What should I be looking out for if I think my brakes are going and I do need this part to help get them back up to normal?
One of the first things you may notice is that your brake feels like it pulsates when you moderately press on your brakes in an effort to stop. If your brake pedal slowly moves to the floor even when you are not asking it to be pressed down more then you probably have a problem with your brakes. You could also need to press your brakes very hard to get them to work which is also indicative of needing some kind of brake service. If you have the problem in reverse, or that your brakes are not activating or responding well to being depressed, then you also may have brake problems. Other signs include the brakes locking when going slower speeds, the brakes giving off smoke or a burning smell. Your brakes making a squealing or grinding sound. If your brakes have a longer braking distance than you are used to seeing then you probably have a problem. A vehicle that pulls to one side or the other could also have a brake problem. If you have any of the above then you should get your brakes repaired as soon as possible.
