A spare gallon or two of fuel is cheap insurance when the van is a long way from the next station, or when a generator, chainsaw or dirt bike rides along. Where a round jerry can needs a bulky cage, a RotopaX gas can is a flat, roto-molded pack that bolts down to a ladder, rack, tire carrier or door panel instead of sliding around the cargo area.

Choose Your Size

  • RotopaX 1 Gallon Gas Can (RX-1G): 13.5" x 9.5" x 3"
  • RotopaX 1.75 Gallon Gas Can (RX-1.75G): 14.5" x 13" x 3.5"
  • RotopaX 2 Gallon Gas Can, Gen 2 (RXX-2G): 18" x 14" x 3", the newer design with a flat bottom, a stronger shell and a higher-flow spout
  • RotopaX 2 Gallon Gas Can, Gen 1 (RX-2G): 18" x 14" x 3", with an interlocking bottom that pairs it with another Gen 1 2 gallon pack (gas, diesel, water or storage) in the footprint of a 4 gallon pack
  • RotopaX 3 Gallon Gas Can (RX-3G): 16" x 15" x 4.5"
  • RotopaX 2 Gallon Diesel (RX-2D): 18" x 14" x 3", molded in yellow so it's never mistaken for gasoline

Dimensions are height x width x depth. Need more range? The RotopaX 4 gallon gas can is a longer pack that rides on two mounts.

Built for Fuel

  • CARB and EPA compliant for sale and use in all 50 states, California included, and certified to ASTM and NFPA standards.
  • Low-permeation shell: a three-layer roto-molded wall with a barrier layer holds vapors in.
  • Flame mitigation device in the neck, a required safety part; leave it in place.
  • Spout and cap come with every pack.
  • 10-year leak-free guarantee from RotopaX.
  • Made in the USA.

Mounting

Each pack has a hole through its center that slides over a RotopaX pack mount; the mount's handle threads down and clamps the pack tight against the surface. A pack on its own doesn't include a mount, so pick a Standard, Deluxe or Locking mount in the Mount option above to get both in one order, or add one later from our RotopaX mounts listing. Any RotopaX mount fits any RotopaX pack.

Standard, Deluxe or Locking?

  • Standard Pack Mount: one T-handle that spins down to clamp the pack. The simplest, lowest-cost choice, and plenty for a pack that rides on pavement.
  • Deluxe (DLX) Pack Mount: two arms that tighten separately, so the pack stays put on washboard and trail. RotopaX's best seller, and the one it recommends when you stack two packs.
  • Locking (LOX) Pack Mount: the Deluxe two-arm design plus a lock cylinder and two keys, so the pack and what's in it stay on the van when you're away from it. Single packs only: it doesn't work with an extension.

All three bolt down on the same 4" disc base and fit every RotopaX pack.

To stack two packs on one mount (two is the limit), add an extension sized for the bottom pack and use a Standard or Deluxe mount. Our Pack Mount Extension suits 1, 2 and 4 gallon packs; 1.75 and 3 gallon packs take their own extensions.

Fits Any Van

RotopaX isn't vehicle specific. A pack goes anywhere you can bolt a mount to a flat, solid surface: a rear ladder, roof rack, spare tire carrier, rear-door storage panel or bumper. On a Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster the ladder or roof rack is the usual home, and Aluminess owners can use the BackPACK RotopaX mounting plate.

FAQs

Do RotopaX gas cans leak?

Leaks are uncommon. The main thing is venting: RotopaX asks owners to vent a fuel pack at least once a day, or with every 10 degree temperature swing or 1,000 feet of elevation change, by taking it off the mount, turning the neck to the top and loosening the cap. Skipping venting voids the fuel container warranty. A leak at the neck usually means a worn gasket or spout, which can be replaced.

How full should I keep a RotopaX fuel pack?

Completely full or completely empty. A partly full pack holds more vapor, and RotopaX says a pack expands most on a hot day when it's about a quarter full.

Are RotopaX gas cans legal in California?

Yes. They're CARB and EPA compliant, so they can be sold and used in all 50 states.

Does the gas can come with a mount?

Not on its own. Each pack needs one RotopaX pack mount: choose one in the Mount option to get the pack and mount together, or buy it separately from our RotopaX mounts listing.

What's the difference between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 2 gallon gas cans?

Same size and capacity. The Gen 2 has a flat bottom, a stronger shell and a higher-flow spout. The Gen 1 has an interlocking bottom, so two Gen 1 2 gallon packs can sit together in the footprint of a 4 gallon pack.
