Why Oil Temps Climb on Sprinter OM642 Engines

The Sprinter’s factory cooling system struggles on long mountain passes, when towing trailers, or when carrying heavy camper van conversions. Here’s why oil temps soar past 240–250 °F, even when your coolant looks “normal”:

  • Exhaust heat drives oil temps: High exhaust gas temps (EGTs) dump heat into the turbo housing, which transfers directly into the engine oil.

  • Piston oil squirters add load: Combustion heat flows into the thin oil film, raising oil temperature further.

  • Coolant/oil exchanger bottleneck: The factory heat exchanger tries to balance oil and coolant temps, but when both are hot, oil becomes the “thermal sink” for turbo and piston heat.

  • Result: Oil temps creep higher and higher on sustained climbs — putting stress on bearings, seals, and your turbocharger.

 


 

Why the OM642 Needs an Auxiliary Oil Cooler

The OM642 3.0L Diesel relies heavily on oil for cooling pistons and turbo bearings. In North American use cases (longer climbs, higher GVWR cargo vans, RV conversions), the factory cooler is undersized.
